A pioneer of personal hygiene, he developed some truly innovative products, including mouth rinses, fragranced pomades and an ingenious scented steam vaporiser, while high society flocked to his flagship perfumery in Regent Street to purchase an extensive range of exquisitely packaged perfumes, soaps and bath essences, many of them bearing royal warrants.

Even at this very early stage, Eugene Rimmel sensed the potential of advertising to bring his products to a wider public, and began to publish lavishly illustrated mail order catalogues and to place advertisements in theatre programmes.

When he died in 1887, his two sons inherited his beauty empire, building on their father’s success internationally by developing an extensive colour line with a special focus on eye-enhancing products, in particular Rimmel’s revolutionary mascaras.

So popular did they become that “rimmel” is to this day the word for mascara in several languages (countries such as Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and even Mexico calls mascara Rimmel!)

After the Second World War, Rimmel was acquired by Robert and Rose Caplin, the owners of a London advertising agency.

The news is out!

The fabulous 18 year old, Ong Sheue Yen of Penang was chosen as the winner of the Rimmel London Look Search!

The Rimmel London Look Search was presented by Rimmel London, UK’s best selling cosmetic brand that has established an eclectic touch in Malaysia since 2008. The search was held in conjunction with the 2010 Spotlite Teen Idol Competition as a subsidiary award.

After an extensive 4-month quest to selected Colleges and Malls in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh, and Johor Bahru, Sheue Yen impressed the judges and audiences with her unique style, charisma and confidence that identified with Rimmel London’s philosophy of edgy and versatile street-wise beauty, and emerged as the winner for the search.

If you weren't there to witness the winner of the Rimmel London Look Search last Saturday at Fiesta Street, Sungei Wang, you just missed out on a ton of action. The boys of Spotlite Teen Idol search were showing off their stuff but more importantly the girls was shining through with their fabulous make-up, amazing talents and sparkling personalities.

The boys and girls of 2010 Spotlite Teen Idol busting out their moves. There was plenty of singing and dancing going on but the highlight of the show was a one of a kind catwalk that allowed contestants to strut their stuff in get-ups that fitted their future ambitions.

The girls in their cute outfits, dressed up according to their possible future careers. As you can see, the girls put a lot of effort into making their costumes as authentic as possbile.

Sheue Yen was ecstatic and at the verge of tears when she received her beauty title and prizes from the Brand Manager of Star Asia Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Miss Aster Tan, where she expressed with great excitement that her win was "unbelievable" yet at the same time "a dream come true".

After the show, we managed to get a quick word with Shueue Yen about how she felt. “It was fun to know that I have all the freedom to create my personal style of beauty and glamour with no-set-rules in this contest”, said Sheue Yen as she brought home attractive prizes including RM500 cash and RM500 worth of Rimmel London hamper.

Here is an interesting lass who is from Penang, our 18 year old Ong Sheue Yen. She is a down-to-earth girl who believes in natural beauty. But don't be fooled, she is not just a pretty face; at the semi-finals of Spotlite Teen Idol, this energetic girl impressed the judges with her kung fu moves!

Sheue Yen demonstrated how beauty and strength can be complementary.

Now, let us take a look at Sheue Yen's introduction, as well as her contesting Rimmel London Look:

You would think that with her effortless make-up look, she must have been doing this for years but really she only just began experimenting recently. Sheue Yen didn't use to like make-up, mainly because 1) she often feels a little lazy about it and 2) she believes in natural beauty.

But that has changed since discovering Rimmel London eyeshadows and make-up. She was attracted by their unique and vibrant colour palettes and so she began to wonder what it would be like to use these pretty colours on herself.

From there Sheue Yen realized it was easy to get pretty in a flash. She has since adopted a simple 3 steps routine that includes a quick application of eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara. Despite only knowing the basics, she manages to pull off a simple yet fun look.

我是一位不喜欢化妆的女生，因为我觉得自然就好，但其实有时候是懒惰。=P

但我看到Rimmel London的eye shadow时，我有种被那颜色给吸引了。就想知道那颜色在眼皮上会是什么感觉？

化妆后。

化妆前的我。

所以，我也化起妆来了。

我化妆其实很简单。先是eye liner，eye shadow然后就刷个睫毛膏就行啦！因为我不算是会化妆的女生。

我最不会的是怎么去放eye shadow。因为我总觉得眼皮上有颜色是怪怪的，尤其是烟熏妆。当我用上了Rimmel Londond的eye shadow，我觉得那颜色很自然，一点都不会觉得奇怪！它让我的眼睛变得更亮丽了！=）

Angel Foong, as her name suggests, has an angelic voice, face and body! This 16 years old young lady is a student from SMK Taman Saraya, and despite her tender age, she has a great presence on stage.

During the semi-final competition, she completed wow-ed the judges with her larger than life personality, her expressive and melodic singing. Here are some snapshots of her during the semi-final round:

一直以来都先入为主的觉得浓浓的烟熏妆超难画的，因为很怕把黑色系的眼影给化得很脏。

黑黑一坨的，应该很像熊猫吧？哈哈！

可是最近用了rimmel london后才发现其实如果拥有一盒好用的eye shadow，就不会有这样的问题出现啦。
首先使用professional eyebrow pecil来把眉毛的空隙填补好。

在眼妆的一开始，可以使用rimmel london eye shadow，colour rush quad sweet smoulder里的灰色来做为打底的颜色，涂在整个眼窝，这样眼皮就会有淡淡的光泽感，因为这眼影里含有细微但却有存在感的亮片。

过后就可以使用同系列里smokey noir的深灰色，在眼尾均匀的涂上层。

下一步就是把smokey noir眼影里的黑色涂在双眼皮折痕的地方，在眼尾处可以稍微拉长。

过后就用exaggerate liquid eye linear来画眼线。尽量把眼线画在靠近眼睫毛根部。把眼尾拉长可以使眼睛看起来更加的大也有神。

之后可以用刚才用过的深灰色在下眼尾3分之2处轻轻的带过。再用sweet smoulder里的浅米色涂在眼头，做打亮的动作。

眼影的部分就完成啦~

至于眼睫毛也是不能忽略的地方。

把睫毛夹好后，可以刷上rimmel london的最新产品sexy curves睫毛膏。

用z字型的方式刷睫毛能够使睫毛看起来更加浓密哦~

最后只需放上较为浓密的假睫毛就完成啦~

Morning Boys and Girls~~~We are sooooo excited over the weekend as we were at Sungai Wang to witness the birth of our 6 Finalists for the "Rimmel London Girl Search" in conjunction with the Spotlite Teen Idol Competition 2010!!

Yes, we had soooo much fun and thrill watch the semi-finalists battle it out with their charm, wits, talents and edgy make-up on stage that we were kept on our toes ALL THE TIME!!

Without further ado, as usual, we have some REALLY AWESOME photos taken at the event to share with you. And IF you were at the event, see if you were being caught on OUR camera!! Say 'hi' to us if you are!!!

And here they are, the 6 FINALISTS born to battle it out at the finals of the Spotlite Teen Idol 2010 on 31 July 2010 @ Main Concourse, Sungai Wang. These sassy lass will also be vying to be crowned in the "Rimmel London Look Search" title!

Introducing the Johor Bahru Semi-Finalists of the Rimmel London Look Search

Finally!! Here are the photos from the preliminary round held at Johor Bahru!!! As expected, the crowd was awesomely overwhelming and we thought for a while we might have entered a concert or showcase by a Taiwanese celebrity or something!!

There were a lot of performances and entertainments along the way, but to cut the story short (cos we are sooooo keen to keep up with the pace of this blog) here is the Johor state winner of the preliminary round!

Good Monday Morning Girls and Boys~~~Hope you have had a blast over the weekend, because we at Rimmel London Malaysia sure did!!

We had so much fun over the weekend going through and shortlisting the exciting photos taken at our Rimmel London Search preliminary round in Ipoh, which happened on 19 June, just so that we can share them with you here on our blog. (we know its a bit late, apologies, we were just so absorbed in the photos we didn't realise time passed so quickly!!).

Here you are, some of the event photos for your view pleasure, before we annouce the semin-finalists from Ipoh!

Throughout the competition, the contestants put forth their best performance to wow and impress the judges and audiences. Crowd cheers were almost non-stopping from the beginning till the end, when the contestants...

We believed that the judges had a tough time deciding on the winner for the preliminary round, but it had to be done. And without further ado, everyone, please meet Ipoh state grand-prize winner - Penny Loke, 2 1 years old from Perak Institute of Arts!

At the same time, Penny will be joined by 2 other short-listed semi-finalists to come over to KL to contest in the Semi-final round of our Rimmel London Search!

Following the introduction of the KL semi-finalists of our Rimmel London Look search, today, we are very excited to introduce our 3 semi-finalists from PENANG!!!

However, before we unveil their faces, here are some interesting photos taken during the pre-selection round which happened on 19 June at Queensbay Mall, for your viewing pleasure.

Good morning girls and boys!

As promised, here is our follow-up interview piece with our second contestant of the Rimmel London Look Search, Pauline Ek.

Pauline, a 21 years old student of Inti College has a very sweet face, and also a very extroverted and bubbly character, almost like a perfect mixed between the girl-next-door and the guy’s best friend!!

RL - What is the name for your competing look?

PE – I name it “Mature Temptation”

RL – What inspired you to create this look for the contest?

PE – I want to bring out the other side of me, a less prominent but existing personality in me. In normal everyday life, I would see myself as a plain Jane, or the girl-next-door, and therefore, through this search, I would like to showcase my wilder and more mature side. Hence, I have chosen a leopard top to complement my unique Rimmel London look make-up.

RL – What does being a Rimmel London girl mean to you?

PE - Rimmel London girl needs to have the confidence.

RL – Tell us, why do you think you should win in the “Rimmel London Look” Search?

PE - Because I’m special. I have different characteristics, I am sweet, cute, yet wild and mature. This is also further proven by what my friends say about me. So, I believe with my personalities, I will help create more awareness for Rimmel London.

RL – What are the Rimmel London products you have used to create your look, and why?

PE - I have chosen the Rimmel London's Stay Matte foundation, Blusher, Mascara, Eye-liner, eye shadow with black and grey colour, and the lipstick for my look.

Urban Queen eye make-up tutorial

Hey girls! In this tutorial, we will help you get the Urban Queen eyes with this unique eyeshadow palette from Rimmel London, that has the warm and cold hues tol accentuate your eyes. This eye make-up will brighten up any assemble!

Hey girls! I am sure everyone is nervously awaiting the arrivals of the semi-finals! Don't worry these tutorial will steer you in the right direction and provide you with first hand knowledge on how to achieve the Sweet Smolder eye make-up look in just a few easy steps.

This eyeshadow palette will be able to give you sweet and sexy eyes. The unique colour combination will give you show stopping eyes when your on stage battling it out on the catwalk during the Rimmel London Look search!

Step one: Use a clean eyeshadow brush and apply the pinkish pearl eyeshadow onto your eyelids. Apply as much as you want and make sure that colour coverage is even.

Hey girls! How has your week been so far? For today's eye make-up tutorial we will be showing you how to recreate the Golden Eye look using Rimmel London's eye make-up palette.

This unique colour combination uses warm hues such as brown, gold and blue to spice up your eyes and make you stand out from the crowd! A great way to to impress the judges during the semi-finals of the Rimmel London look search!

Step one: Using an eyeshadow brush, lightly apply the blue eyeshadow on to your eyelids. Adjust how much you want the colour coverage to be, apply more if you want your look to be more dramatic.
Step 2: Once you have applied the blue as your base, apply the brown on to your brow bone with a shading brush to create the depth for your eyes.

Dark Angel eye make-up tutorial

Hello ladies! We meet again! This week we will be teaching you how to recreate the "Dark Angel" look by using Rimmel London eyeshadow.

The wonderful colours in this eyeshadow palette complement one other and make for a wining combination. This is a great night look for eyes! Dramatic and bold, just what you need to capture the attention of the judges during the Rimmel London look search.

The semi-finals are just around the corner, so it's time to take that make-up kit out and practice!

Step 1: Remember to prep your eyelids by applying primer or concealer to allow the colours to stay / longer lasting. Use an eyeshadow brush and apply the black eyeshadow onto your eyelids. Start from the outer comer of your eyelids and slowly move inwards.

Step 2: Apply the purple eyeshadow on to your eyelids. Once you have applied the purple eyeshadow, use a blending brush to blend in the colours to avoid any harsh lines.
Step 3: Finally apply the silver eyeshadow to the inner comers of your eyes. This will make your eyes look much larger.

The final results are fantastic showstopping eye makeup that will make you the center of attention.

Kick Start of Rimmel London Look Search at Sungai Wang on May 16 (Part 2)

The objective of the talent show was for the contestants to impress the judges and crowd, with both their beauty and talent, so that they can score as high as possible to win in the pre-selection!

One of the contestants belted out a Chinese song with such gusto and control, you would have thought she was a professional singer.

Another contestant performed several magic tricks, which included pouring a glass of water into a magazine, and instead of soaking the magazine, the glass of water just vanished into the thin air!

Now as promised, pictures of the gorgeous and talented ladies performing.

After the talent show, the contestants waited nervously for the results to be announced.

The audience were busy rooting for their favorite while the judges were hard at work.

Finally, the five girls who scored the highest points were invited back to the stage as the winner was announced.

These are the three female contestants who won in the KL pre-selection round, who are also our first 3 contestants for the Rimmel London Look Search! Congratulations to the three lovely ladies Angel (left), Collins and Pauline (right) for their preliminary success!

Pauline was the overall winner for this pre-selection round and was rewarded with RM500 cash and also prizes from Rimmel London and other sponsors!

A big congratulations to Pauline, Angel and Collins once again, and we shall see them at the semi-finals!

The next pre-selection round for the male contestants will be @ 6th Floor, Sungai Wang, on May 23 (Sunday!) Come and join us in the fun!

Kick-start of Rimmel London Look Search at Sungai Wang on May 16 (Part 1)

The air was buzzing with excitement as the crowd gathered in Sungai Wang for the pre-selection of 2010 Spotlite Teen Idol Competition, which also marked the official start of our Rimmel London Look Search. The twenty female participants looked amazing with the help of Rimmel London's professional make-up artist, Ling.

Family members and friends of the contestants were constantly cheering and supporting their loved ones throughout the competition! Some from the crowd even brought whistles, and blew them loudly when their favorite appeared on stage.

The crowd gave a roaring welcome to hosts, Kyan and Suki from radio station, OneFM as they gave the welcome on stage.

The contestants then started their catwalk on stage, and introduced themselves to the judges and the crowd. Everyone looked lovely and confident in their school-girl themed outfit.

Ling, a professional make-up artist who has a short stunt in Fashion design and retailing before venturing into the make-up industry 5 years ago, has bagged many outstanding credentials under her belt, including working alongside famed fashion designers in MIFA, creative directors and models in various TV commercials, and editors of stylish fashion magazines just to name a few.

Today, she has taken time out from her colourful schedule to talk to us, lending her expertise in this exclusive interview conducted just for you girls, especially those competing in our Rimmel London Look Search!

Q: To you what is the Rimmel London Look?

A: The Rimmel London Look is edgy and fashionable. Rimmel London is an experimental and bold brand when it comes to the usage of different colours. For example, their eyeshadow pallets come with a variety of bold and daring colour combination, that can be blended and combined to achieve different looks.

Q:What do you think the judges will be looking for in the search?

A: I believe the judges will be focusing on the finer details, so it is important for each contestant to pay attention to both the make-up skills applied and the overall presentation of their look.

It will be a great bonus if they can also ensure that their outfit and make-up bonds well to showcase their unique personality. It is also equally important to identify the key feature you'd want to highlight. If a contestant wants to highlight their eyes, then it is recommended that nude colors are used for the lip and cheek.

As for the skin, less is definitely more. Use foundation sparingly and apply it as thinly as possible for a fresher and cleaner youthful effect.

Q: What is your favorite Rimmel London product?

A: For me, it's mascara. Rimmel London has a galaxy range of mascaras for different types of lashes and they all work wonders! They all have different brushes that will give the contestants different results. I always use two different mascaras to make lashes look long and full of volume.

Q: What are the key looks that are associated with the Rimmel London Search?

A: Since most of the competitors will be 16 to 22 years of age. It is important that the make-up matches with the competitors age group. When your younger you are able to experiment and take more risks! Show the judges your personality by using your face as a canvas to express yourself.

Q: What type of (eye / cheek) colours suit Asian skin?

A: An orange peachy blush generally looks good on the fairer asian skin tone. It is a great way to look fresher and make your cheeks pop. Competitors with fairer skin will look good with colder hues such as light blue, light pink and sliver. For darker skin tones, I would recommend warmer hues like brown, orange and gold.

Q: What are some of the make up trends this Summer?

A: There are always countless of new make-up trends being featured on the runways. However, what works for the models might not necessarily work for Asian skin. It is best to use make-up products that suit you and that highlight the competitors outstanding features. It is important for the contestants to work with what they have and use make-up products to accentuate them.

Q: Do you think make-up plays an important role in a woman's live?

A: Yes, i think it does! It is a great confidence booster! When used correctly, make-up can transform a person and it also helps hide that embarrassing spot during important occasions.

Q:What are some essential tools to use when applying make-up?

A: I cannot live without my eyelash curler! It is the most important tool in my make-up kit. It is also very important to apply your make-up under white light to see things more clearly.

Having a three-steps skin care routine is also equally important to keep the skin clean , which is a good canvas for applying make-up. Always remember to prep and prime your face before applying foundation. Contact lenses and lashes also help make Asian eyes to appear much larger.
